The Try Scuba class is an introductory class designed to introduce non-certified divers to be safe and comfortable while enjoying diving in confined water.  The class incorporates basic scuba diving theory, knowledge and equipment configuration.

The class is normally conducted over a half-day period, and cumulatively involves a minimum of 4 hours of instruction including academics and confined water, with a maximum depth of 10’/3m using air as a breathing gas.

Class Upgrades

The theory, knowledge and equipment used are consistent with full certification and one can be upgraded to full Zuba Junior Open Water diver certification if older than 10 years of age or the full Scuba Recreational 1 or Open Water diver certification if older than 16 years of age.

Class Information

The Try Scuba class is designed to provide a introduction to Scuba pool equipment configuration, basic diving physics and physiology, situational awareness and understanding the aquatic environment.

The in water skills will be conducted in confined water.  These skills will include, but not be limited to, snorkeling techniques, buoyancy, trim, propulsion.  Class requirements include two hours of academic review and 2 hours of confined water work, a minimum of one skin dive and one confined water dive.

Class Limits

  • Confined water only

  • Maximum depth 10’/3m

  • Standard gas is air (21% O2)


  • Minimum age of 7; students under 16 must be supervised by parent or legal guardian

  • Must complete UTD online registration process

  • Must be able to swim 10'/3m on a breath hold

  • Must demonstrate a swim 25 yards/22m in less than 14 minutes without stopping and a 2 minute survival swim/float

  • No smoking

  • Use of prescription drugs must be authorized by a physician prior to training
